1999, A 16-year-old student steps off a school bus and into the headquarters of Nortel Networks — then one of the ten largest companies on earth, commanding over 35% of the entire Toronto Stock Exchange. The air inside buzzed with a strange new word: VOIP. Voice over IP. The idea that a voice could travel through the internet rather than a telephone wire felt like science fiction.

 I didn't understand the jargon. I didn't need to. I just knew, standing in that building, that I was touching the future. And I knew — with the absolute certainty only a teenager can muster — that my life had to be built around this. 

Whatever this was. So I studied Electronic and Communications Engineering. I built a career in engineering, then consulting, then entrepreneurship. And twenty-odd years later, that science-fiction word — VOIP — became so ordinary that we don't even call it that anymore. We just call it calling someone. Video over IP? That's just FaceTiming your mom.

China, three decades later, is where the world turns to see what's next. AI. Autonomous systems. Robotics. The technologies that feel like science fiction today — the ones that make you lean forward and ask, "How is that even possible?" — are becoming tomorrow's everyday reality at a pace the world has never seen.
